Strathmore Centre for Youth Development – Case study SCYD01

Name of Employability provider

Strathmore Centre for Youth Development (SCYD)

We’re currently working with a young woman who came to SCYD for support with finding work. She hadn’t worked before and had low skills, so we worked with her on gaining those skills and becoming job-ready.

How it happened / the process

Our participant has an interest in animals so we introduced her to Riding for the Disabled and we’ve been supporting her work there, including sorting her transport to work, so we can establish just what her abilities are.

What are the challenges and how are we helping?

This young woman lived in a remote rural area where it is harder to find sustainable jobs, so she hadn’t had work experience and wasn’t sure what she could do.

We listened to her and gave her the room to grow and explore who she is and what she’d like to do. We have partnerships with other agencies and organisations so we were able to search for jobs and volunteering opportunities that would match her interests.

Outcome and next steps

She is enjoying working at Riding for the Disabled, and she is proving herself to be reliable and focused.

We have also approached one of our partners, Rathbone Training, and they will be able to work with her when she is ready.

We are presently ascertaining what travel support she needs to access other services in the Perth area. We can then aim at assisting her into college via a variety of routes.

Our participant is already asking for help with CVs for specific local jobs which is very positive.

How can you get Employability support from SCYD?

If you’re aged 16-25 and you’d like support to move into work, volunteering, further education or training, you can pop in and visit us, email [email protected] or call 01250 872121. We are open from 9am to 5pm. You can just pop in – you don’t need an appointment. We also have a purely social drop-in running from 2pm to 6pm Thursdays and Fridays at present; this is due to be expanded.

We’ll have an initial chat to find out what you need support with and how we can work together.

If you’re an employer, charity or other organisation who’d like to work with us or find out more about how we support young people, please call 01250 872121 or email [email protected]
