Strathmore Centre for Youth Development – Case Study James

Participant

SCYD02 - James

Name of Employability provider

Strathmore Centre for Youth Development (SCYD)

Background

James came to SCYD for support with finding sustainable work. He had been unemployed long-term, and didn’t have any work experience or work skills. He had tried a few part-time jobs which hadn’t lasted due to his changeable circumstances, and he needed some support with getting a permanent place to live.

How it happened / the process

Mark Coxon, Employability Development Worker at SCYD, says, “I worked closely together with Lindsay Grant of the Housing department at Perth & Kinross Council to ensure that he could stay in the accommodation he currently lived at. That allowed him to start considering work and college.”

SCYD assisted him in dealing responsibly with debt and to start to feel more confident and independent.

What were the challenges and how did we help?

James didn’t feel like he had many options, but we encouraged him to volunteer in our café. He had access to the phones and facilities at SCYD which helped hugely with his job-searching. Eventually he was able to consider work which he swiftly got.

Outcome and next steps

Six months ago he came in to see us at SCYD and he’s looking at his longer term now. He has his own place and is due to move to Perth. He would like a job working with animals in future, so his immediate goals are to get into work and do a link course, and then to go to college in the longer term.

How can you get Employability support from SCYD?

If you’re aged 16-25 and you’d like support to move into work, volunteering, further education or training, you can pop in and visit us, email mark@scyd.org.uk or call 01250 872121. We are open from 9am to 5pm. You can just pop in – you don’t need an appointment. We also have a purely social drop-in running from 2pm to 6pm Thursdays and Fridays at present; this is due to be expanded.

We’ll have an initial chat to find out what you need support with and how we can work together.

If you’re an employer, charity or other organisation who’d like to work with us or find out more about how we support young people, please call 01250 872121 or email mark@scyd.org.uk.
